Capone's watch as well as a musical composition he handwrote behind bars in Alcatraz were among the items up for bid in the "Gangsters, Outlaws and Lawmen" auction by RR Auction, an auction house headquartered in Boston. The auction was held Saturday afternoon at the Royal Sonesta hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
According to the auction house, the rounded triangular pocket watch was personally owned and used by Capone. The timepiece is on its original chain made of 14-karat white gold. The exterior of the case features 23 diamonds shaped to form Capone's initials, "AC," which are encircled by 26 additional diamonds. Another 72 diamonds circle the watch's platinum face and gold-tone impressed numerals.
Kidnapping has become an illicit world-wide business netting 150 billion dollars per year. This film addresses the issue in a darkly comedic fashion. Pocket Gangsters addresses the dark world of "pocketing" human lives, IE: putting a victim's life in grave peril and demanding an obscene amount of ransom from the relatives or friends of the hostage. In the film, a young woman whose family is worth millions, is kidnapped.[3] Director Hemant Nilim Das related that the film "is loosely based on the story of the kidnapping and murder of an NGO-activist Sanjay Ghose" as "a hostage drama cum comic thriller,"[8] and inspired by events centered in Guwahati, an area which has become "the epicenter of child-kidnapping".[9]
On October 8, 175 items from the estate of Al Capone were auctioned off. One of the biggest lots among them was Al Capone’s Patek Philippe pocket watch, selling for $229,900 (including buyer’s premium). It’s a huge result for a legendary timepiece, especially considering the auction house estimate of $25-50k.
Capone’s Patek pocket watch is platinum with 90 single-cut diamonds on the case to form his initials, AC. The lot description provides further that the watch isn’t working and the dial is turning a yellow/tropical color. Oh, and it’s missing the minute hand.
Still, no bother. In a world where provenance is one of the most valuable things a watch can have, this gangster’s timepiece certainly has it, coming from one of the world’s most infamous tax evaders. The watch was passed from Capone and his wife Mae to their son Sonny, and eventually to Sonny’s daughters (Capone’s granddaughters), who are the ones who put up all the items in the estate sale.
Al Capone’s Patek pocket watch may have been the biggest timepiece at the auction, but it wasn’t the only one. While Capone’s Patek was certainly fit for a gangster kingpin, his son Sonny had a handful of watches that were, well, fit for the son of a gangster:
Sonny’s Gold Elgin pocket watch. Witherell’s says that “By oral tradition, Barbara Capone mentioned it was used by Sonny Capone at shooting events.” Lot sold for $4,325.
Sonny’s Longines pocket watch. Perhaps my favorite of the bunch. A Longines chronograph pocket watch with an “NRA regional championship” fob attached. Sold for $8,470.
Mae Capone’s platinum Jacoby wristwatch. A small, beautiful platinum wristwatch with diamond bezel and a manual movement that looks to have been gifted by Sonny to his mother. The caseback is engraved inscribed, Sonny / To / Mother / Xmas / 1937. Sold for $20,570.
Sonny’s Mimo 8-day wristwatch. An Art Deco 8-day wristwatch by Mimo, gifted to Sonny from Val and Ralph Capone (Ralph was Al’s brother, and Val his wife, who divorced him in 1938). Engraved on the caseback, Merry Christmas / Sonny / From Val and Ralph / 1931. Sold for $4,538.
Finally, the top lot of the sale was Capone’s “favorite” automatic .45 caliber gun, which sold for $1,040,060. It’s funny, the auction was highlighted by guns and jewelry; a century later, gangsters like Capone are still attracted to the same. The more things change, I guess.
Capone indulged in good cigars, flashy suits, gourmet food and the best drink, with a particular love of flamboyant and expensive jewelry. He favored large pinky rings and diamond-studded accessories, with this pocket watch being one of them.
The watch was crafted by the Illinois Watch Company, originally known as the Springfield Watch Company, founded in Springfield, Illinois, in 1870. In 1928, the Illinois Watch Company was purchased by the Hamilton Watch Company, which continued to operate under the Illinois name. Emphasis shifted from pocket watches to wristwatches, but the Great Depression forced Hamilton to close the factory. The company is currently owned by Craig Stone, and it produces and repairs watches out of Quincy, Illinois.
The winning bidder of the watch was not identified. The buyer is a collector who has an eye for interesting American artifacts, said RR Auction Executive Vice President Bobby Livingston. He was among about 30 internet, telephone and in-person bidders.
A Double Albert chain works the same as a Single Albert, but it has an extra chain with a medallion or pendant on it (also referred to as a fob). This 2nd piece slips in the pocket opposite your watch.
Bolt ring pocket watch chains are similar to wallet chains because they attach directly to your belt loop by the spring-loaded ring lock. You can also attach the bolt ring to a buttonhole in your vest or waistcoat for a look similar to a T-bar chain.
A vest and a waistcoat are basically the same thing. For some, a vest is more casual, while a waistcoat is reserved for formal wear and accompanied by a tie. Regardless of what you call it, this sleeveless garment is perfect for a pocket watch.
The button you choose is determined by how much chain you want to hang down. The pocket you choose is always the one opposite your dominant hand. This frees up your hand for important things like signing documents, shaking hands and pointing at things.
Not only are they smart-looking accessories, but engraved pocket watchesalso make the best groomsmen gifts and look brilliant at weddings. Not sure how to customize yours Check out our suggestions for personalization here.
If you want to wear your pocket watch with a suit jacket or blazer, attach one end of the chain to the lapel buttonhole and place the watch in your breast pocket. This is a smart way to bring interest to your suit without having to go all-in with a lapel pin and pocket square. And a great look for any wedding or formal event.
Another way to wear your pocket watch with a blazer is to pull a T-bar through a buttonhole on the front and place your watch in one of your front pockets. We suggest putting it in the pocket opposite your dominant hand.
The character list, including the typically cheesy Italiangangsters, is good fun, too, and even the open-plan game structureis undeniably engaging, albeit somewhat familiar to anyone who'splayed Driv3r or the original Grand Theft Auto.
At home he turned on the television to watch the unfolding story two hundred miles away. The gunmen had threatened to kill one of the hostages by midnight if their demands were not met. The police chief was interviewed, the mayor was interviewed, three experts in hostage situations were interviewed, an expert in criminal behavior was on talking about the psychology of hostage-taking. Two former hostages from similar crimes were on. By the time those opinions were fully expressed and added to the dynamics of the event, Alden had fallen asleep on the couch.
And while the television flickered across his closed eyes and the stubble on his face, he dreamed of an old woman walking into a bank, crying softly, carrying an amethyst ring and a gold pocket watch in her open palms.
Alden sat back in his chair, staring blankly out the window where the hot yellow Nebraska afternoon burned around him. Jennifer and Henry repeated in his mind. A bead of sweat rolled from his forehead. He closed his eyes and saw again the woman in his dream, hands extending the ring and the watch like an offering.
He swirled the black cap off the bottle of Jack Daniels and took a long swig. He closed his eyes and once again saw the image of the fragile old woman standing in the bank holding out the ring and the watch in the palms of her thin, lined hands. This time, she reached out to him.
About this time, the gangster, who was a vile-looking person and filled me with dread, made a joking remark about picking the pocket of a wealthy young man present. We all realized that he had broken the rules by referring to his vocation, and it seemed to be the signal for the party to break up. Besides, we all felt that he was really not joking. 153554b96e
